The Summer 2025 issue of Project Upland Magazine sets the tone for hotter days, when dove season is the next hunting event on the horizon. The cover story explores southern dove culture and the family ties surrounding it. We then step into the “Outlier” of the .410 shotgun, tracing its origins in the United States, ballistic science, and popularity today. Public lands and their place in America come into focus with author Mark Parman. “The Mission” brings us a unique story of fatherhood and the uplands. On the conservation front, biologist Frank Loncarich shares his perspective on the dramatic decline of the Greater Prairie Chicken. From parking lot pigeon sales to the literary legacy of one of the greats, George Bird Evans, this issue will help you pass the time until hunting season.
We also feature our usual suspects, including a great Italian recipe from Rossano Russo, Jenny Nguyen-Wheatley’s Hawaiian twist on quail, and our always-needed comic relief from Naomi Coates.
We hope this issue finds you preparing for the coming seasons while still enjoying the fruits of summer with your dogs and family.

The Spring 2025 issue of Project Upland Magazine sets the tone for an exploration of the past, present, and future. The cover story is a stunning photographic exploration of the endangered Lesser Prairie Chicken. Stepping into the past, we try to solve the mystery of the extinction of what was once the most prolific game bird in North America—the Passenger Pigeon. On the notes of spring, we dabble in turkeys with a story of tradition and rich history, along with a Japanese-style turkey recipe from Jenny Nguyen-Wheatley. We go across the Atlantic to Germany to explore the country’s enduring dog culture, which continues to influence the United States today. We also have our usual suspects, like a great Italian recipe from Rossano Russo and our always-needed comic relief from Naomi Coates.
We hope this issue finds you with the edge of cabin fever gone along with the snow, and with thoughts of days spent with dogs, friends, and family.

Fall in the uplands is a contrast of busy times as we move across the landscape in pursuit of game, highlighted by periods of silence in camps across the country, campfires, lanterns, and hopefully some good reading material. In Volume Six, Issue Three, we lean heavily into the stories and conversations that bring on upland literature. The cover story features our newest published book, Mark Parman’s “Upland Matters,” with an illustration by Jay Dowd. We also dive into our latest audiobook, “Chic and I,” and we do not forget the dogs, guns, and wild birds that make this all so special to us. Rossano moves from Italian cuisine to take on the American classic burger with a grouse twist, while Jenny gives us a flavorful exploration of Vietnamese cuisine and quail.
We hope this issue makes it into your hunting camps this fall and becomes well-worn from friends and family as you make your own stories in the fields and forests.

In Volume Six, Issue Two, we explore best practices from lead training to Spaniel field trials. In the world of shooting, we delve into the origins of Sporting clays. In culture, we traverse topics from music to upland sporting art. As expected, our resident chef writers guide us on a flavorful journey from Italian-inspired “Sangweech” to flavor-packed Korean cooking. And as always, we continue to address the unique conservation issues across the North American landscape.
We hope this issue serves as a conversation piece with family and friends on warm days and as a great primer for those daydreams of the fall hunting season.

Winter is approaching, and we greet the snowy days with both reflection and anticipation. The cover story takes us to the Southwest quail of New Mexico with Ray Trejo, featuring the story (and film) “Season’s Musings.” We start with comforting snow day recipes from Rossano Russo and Jenny Nguyen-Wheatley. In the realm of firearms, we welcome our first contribution from Del Whitman, a veteran gunsmith whose extensive knowledge we are all eager to learn from. Our journey with the birds spans from the classic “An Attitude Towards Game” by George Bird Evans to “The Last Prairie Chicken.” As in every issue, we delve into the dogs we adore, the conservation challenges we face, and lighten the mood with a dash of humor.
We hope this issue finds a place beside a comfortable chair, in the warm glow of the fireplace, surrounded by friends, family, and dreams of the current and upcoming seasons.

The release of Volume Five, Issue Three signifies a pivotal moment in the journey of Project Upland Magazine. Looking back, it’s been five years since we introduced Issue Zero in September of 2018. The brand first launched in 2014, but little did we know then that our print publication would be our hallmark. This special issue is both a celebration and reflection, delving into the brand’s unique origins as narrated candidly by our founder, illustrating how we’ve often veered from the traditional path.
Diving into the pages, readers will discover the rich tapestry of the upland community, a diversity we’ve always been keen to spotlight. Our cover story offers a glimpse into our forthcoming film, “The River as Our Guide,” enriched with personal anecdotes from Callie Krewson. Merging art and conservation is the captivating “Woman of the Land, the Lek, and the Natural Lab.” As a nod to our reverence for history, we’ve included a selection from Edmund Davis’ 1908 classic, “Woodcock Shooting.” For our shared love of dogs, delve into articles discussing theories on wind and scent cones, a whimsical exploration of finding the perfect dog breed, a deep dive into the Brittany’s history, and so much more.
We’re immensely grateful to have you alongside us on this adventure. It’s the dedication of subscribers like you that propels our story forward.
